On June 7, 2008 members of the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office participated in the National Cops on Top Climb. Expeditions of Police Officers from each of the fifty states climbed to the highest point in those states to honor police officers killed in the line of duty. At 3360 feet above sea level, Hoye’s Crest, located on Backbone Mountain in Garrett County, is the highest point in Maryland. The group honored all fallen officers and two of their own; Deputy Sheriff David G. Livengood and his K-9 Sheppard “Sarge” were killed by gunman in Oakland Maryland on January 18, 1979, responding to a burglar alarm. Pictured left to right are DFC Curtis O’Neal, Major Randy Resh, Det. Dave McLaughlin, Cpl. Chris Helbig and his K-9 Sheppard “Bach”, Det. Dave Teets, DFC Val Drummond, Sgt. Clark Warnick and Lt. Mike Bittinger.
